Generate random words for writing prompts, games, passwords, charades, and creative projects. 12 categories, length filter, Diceware passphrase mode with entropy estimate.
A free random word generator with 12 inline word categories — nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, animals, colors, foods, places, objects, emotions, concepts, names — totaling ~620 curated words. Six modes: single word, multiple words, word combo (adjective + noun + verb), random sentence template, name generator (first + last), and Diceware-style passphrase with entropy estimate. Filters for length, starting letter, exclude-already-shown, and category multi-select. Passphrase mode uses crypto.getRandomValues for cryptographically secure randomness. Saves favorites to localStorage. Built for writing prompts, Pictionary, charades, password seeding, and creative unstuck moments.
Passphrase strength is measured in bits of entropy — roughly, how many guesses an attacker would need to find your password. A 4-digit PIN has 13 bits (10,000 possibilities). A 6-digit PIN has 20 bits. A 12-character lowercase password has 56 bits. A typical password (8 chars, mixed case + symbols) has about 40-50 bits — crackable in days by a determined attacker. A 4-word Diceware passphrase from a 7,776-word list has 51 bits — comparable strength but far easier to remember. A 6-word Diceware passphrase has 77 bits — the EFF's recommended minimum for sensitive accounts. The tool's 620-word pool gives slightly less per-word entropy than the EFF list (9.3 vs 12.9 bits), so use 5-7 words for equivalent strength.
Different uses call for different category mixes. Writing prompts: include emotions and concepts for evocative starts ("solitude", "betrayal"). Pictionary / charades: stick to nouns, animals, objects, foods — visually concrete things. Children's games: animals, colors, foods are best — concrete and age-appropriate. Improv: emotions and abstract concepts force creative interpretation. Code testing / mock data: names, places, objects produce realistic-looking but unrelated data. Naming brainstorming: combine adjective + concept for evocative startup or product names. The tool's multi-select category filter lets you craft the exact pool you need.
For everyday use (writing prompts, games, charades), Math.random() is more than sufficient. For password generation (Diceware mode), the tool uses crypto.getRandomValues — the browser's cryptographically secure random source — so each word is drawn with true uniform randomness across the curated 620-word pool. The entropy estimate (e.g., "4 words ≈ 38 bits, hard to brute-force") is calculated from the pool size and word count.
Diceware is a method for generating high-entropy passphrases by rolling physical dice to pick words from a fixed list. The original EFF Diceware list has 7,776 words (5 dice = 6^5 = 7,776), giving 12.9 bits per word. This tool uses a 620-word curated pool, so each word adds about 9.3 bits of entropy. Four words ≈ 37 bits (resistant to typical attacks but not ultra-secure); six words ≈ 56 bits (strong); eight words ≈ 74 bits (very strong, comparable to 12-character random alphanumeric). Use 4-6 word passphrases for online accounts, 6-8 for high-security contexts.
Yes — pick the letter from the A-Z chip grid and the generator will only output words starting with that letter from your selected categories. If no words match (rare combinations), the filter is ignored to prevent infinite empty results. This is useful for word games like "Categories" or "Word Chain" where each round needs a starting letter.
Word combo gives you an adjective + noun + verb-s formed into a "phrase" like "Brilliant Cat Dances" — three random words from three categories. Sentence template fills a structured sentence ("The {adjective} {noun} {verb}s {adverb} through the {place}.") to produce something readable like "The mysterious eagle dances quickly through the harbor." Combos are good for naming games and prompts; sentences for writing exercises.
No. Favorites are saved to your browser's localStorage with a 200-word cap. They persist across page reloads and browser restarts on the same device but never leave your machine. To export, copy them to clipboard from the favorites panel; there's no cross-device sync.
