What is QR Code Generator?

This QR code generator turns any URL, plain text, Wi-Fi credential, email address, phone number, or SMS template into a scannable QR code in real-time as you type. The output is a <strong>static</strong> code — the data is encoded directly into the pattern, not stored on a server — so it will still work ten years from now, will not expire, and cannot be tracked or revoked by a third party. Customise foreground and background colours, pick a size, and download as PNG for screens or SVG for print. No account needed; generation runs entirely in your browser.

How to Use

  1. Enter a URL, text, or other data in the input field
  2. Watch the QR code generate instantly as you type
  3. Customize colors using the color pickers
  4. Download as PNG or SVG using the buttons below the QR code

Static vs. dynamic QR codes (and why static is usually better)

There are two kinds of QR codes on the web, and they behave completely differently:

  • Static QR codes encode the actual data (the URL, the Wi-Fi password, the text) directly into the pattern of black squares. Once printed or shared, nothing can change — the code always points to the same thing. This tool generates static codes.
  • Dynamic QR codes encode a short redirect URL pointing to a third-party service (bit.ly-style). Scanning hits the service, which then redirects to wherever the owner currently has the code pointed. Great for tracking scans or changing destinations after print — but if the service shuts down or the subscription lapses, every code you distributed goes dead.

Plenty of restaurants and events learned this the hard way during 2023–2024 when a few popular dynamic-QR services raised prices or disappeared. For most use cases — a Wi-Fi password on a fridge magnet, a menu QR taped to a table, a contact vCard on a business card — static codes are safer, free, and last forever.

Error correction and logo overlays

QR codes include built-in Reed-Solomon error correction — mathematical redundancy that lets a scanner reconstruct the data even if part of the code is damaged or obscured. There are four correction levels:

LevelRecovers up toWhen to use
L (Low)7 %Clean digital displays, high-quality print.
M (Medium)15 %Default — good for most general printing.
Q (Quartile)25 %Outdoor signage, labels that may get scuffed.
H (High)30 %Codes with a centred logo or graphic overlay.

Level H is what makes those QR codes with a company logo in the middle actually scannable — the logo physically covers part of the code, but as long as less than 30 % is obscured, the error correction fills in the missing data. Trade-off: higher error correction means the code holds less information (or needs a denser pattern to hold the same amount), so for long URLs, consider shortening first.

Wi-Fi, vCard, and other structured QR formats

QR codes can encode more than just URLs. Scanners recognise a handful of text patterns and offer to do useful things with them:

  • Wi-Fi — format: WIFI:T:WPA;S:NetworkName;P:password;;. Scanning prompts iOS and Android to join the network in one tap. Perfect for cafés, Airbnbs, and guest Wi-Fi posters.
  • vCard — a multi-line contact card. Scanning offers to save name, phone, email, address straight into the contacts app.
  • Email — mailto:[email protected]?subject=Hello. Opens the email app with a pre-filled message.
  • SMS — sms:+15551234567?body=Hi there. Opens the texting app with a pre-filled SMS.
  • Phone call — tel:+15551234567. Prompts to call the number.
  • Location — geo:37.7749,-122.4194. Opens in Maps.

You can use any of these formats as the text input — just paste the structured string and the generator will encode it. Most modern phone cameras scan QR codes natively without a separate app, and will recognise these formats and offer the right action.
