The calculation looks simple — today's date minus your date of birth — but month lengths and leap years make it surprisingly easy to get wrong. We compute it the same way government forms do: subtract the birth year from the current year, then decrement by one if the current month and day haven't yet reached your birth month and day.
For example, someone born on 15 March 1990 checking on 10 March 2026 is 35, not 36 — because their birthday hasn't happened yet this year. Five days later, on 15 March 2026, they turn 36. The breakdown into months, days, hours, and minutes then fills in the remainder from your last birthday up to the exact moment you opened the page.
Leap years occur every year divisible by 4, except centuries not divisible by 400 (so 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not). If you were born on 29 February, your "official" birthday in non-leap years varies by jurisdiction — some countries treat 28 February as your birthday, others use 1 March. Our calculator counts age by elapsed full years: if you were born 29 Feb 2000, you turn 26 on 28 Feb 2026 (the last day of February in a non-leap year), which matches how most common-law countries handle it.
