Net worth — not salary — is the single best measure of financial health. A doctor earning $400k who spends $400k has a net worth of zero. A teacher earning $60k who saves and invests for 30 years can retire a millionaire. Tracking net worth quarterly forces you to focus on the gap between what you own and what you owe, which is the only number that actually compounds into long-term wealth.
There are only three levers: increase assets (save and invest more), decrease liabilities (pay off high-interest debt first), or increase the return on existing assets (move idle cash into index funds, real estate, or retirement accounts). The biggest gains usually come from killing credit card debt (15–25% interest) and maxing tax-advantaged retirement accounts (401k, PPF, EPF) where employer match and tax savings effectively give you an instant 30–100% return.
Median US net worth ranges from about $39k under age 35 to over $410k for ages 65–74 (Federal Reserve SCF). Indian medians are dramatically lower due to wealth concentration — most household wealth sits in real estate. UAE expat households skew higher due to tax-free income but face end-of-service rather than long-term pension accumulation. Use the comparison as a directional benchmark, not a target — your goal is steady upward progress, not beating an arbitrary peer.
Assets are anything you own that has monetary value — cash, investments, retirement accounts, real estate (use current market value), vehicles, jewelry, business interests. Liabilities are anything you owe — mortgage balance, car loans, student loans, credit card balances, personal loans, taxes due.
Always use current market value, not purchase price. Check Zillow/Redfin (US), 99acres/MagicBricks (India), or Bayut/Property Finder (UAE) for a realistic estimate. Same for cars — use current resale value, not what you paid.
Below 30% is considered healthy, 30–50% is moderate, and above 50% means you are highly leveraged and should prioritize paying down debt. Mortgage debt is generally less worrying than high-interest credit card debt.
For the US, we use the Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances (2022 release, projected to 2026). For India, RBI and NSSO household wealth approximations. For UAE, estimates from Credit Suisse / UBS Global Wealth Reports — note that UAE has limited public median data.
