The WHO recommends under 25g (6 teaspoons) of added sugar daily. The AHA recommends 36g for men and 25g for women. These refer to added/free sugars, not naturally occurring sugars in whole fruits.
Added sugar includes any sugar put into food during processing or preparation — table sugar, honey, syrups, and sugars in fruit juices. It does NOT include sugars naturally present in whole fruits, vegetables, or plain milk.
Nutritionally, fruit juice contains similar amounts of sugar as soda (21-24g per glass). While juice has some vitamins, whole fruit is always the better choice — it has fiber that slows sugar absorption.
Excess sugar impacts the liver (fatty liver disease), pancreas (insulin resistance → diabetes), heart (elevated triglycerides), brain (dopamine dysregulation, cognitive decline), teeth (cavities), and skin (accelerated aging through glycation).
