Calculate LTCG and STCG tax owed on stocks, real estate, gold, debt, and crypto for India and the US — with auto holding-period detection.
A free Capital Gains Tax Calculator that computes Long-Term and Short-Term capital gains tax on equity, debt, real estate, gold, and crypto. Supports India (post FY 2024-25 reforms — equity STCG 20%, equity LTCG 12.5% above ₹1.25L exemption, real estate dual-method 12.5% no-indexation vs 20% with indexation, debt at slab, VDA flat 30%) and the United States (2025 federal LTCG 0/15/20% brackets, STCG taxed as ordinary income). Auto-detects holding period from purchase and sale dates.
The Union Budget 2024 simplified India's capital gains regime effective 23 July 2024. Listed equity and equity mutual funds now attract a flat 20% STCG (up from 15%) and 12.5% LTCG above the enhanced ₹1.25 lakh annual exemption (up from ₹1 lakh). Real estate, gold, and unlisted assets are taxed at 12.5% without indexation, though property acquired before 23-Jul-2024 retains a grandfathered choice between the new flat rate and the legacy 20%-with-indexation method. Debt mutual funds bought after April 2023 are taxed entirely at slab rates regardless of holding period, while VDAs (crypto) attract a flat 30% with no loss set-off.
The United States distinguishes sharply between short-term gains (assets held ≤ 1 year, taxed as ordinary income at 10–37%) and long-term gains (held over 1 year). For 2025, long-term rates are 0% for single filers with taxable income up to $48,350 ($96,700 MFJ), 15% up to $533,400 ($600,050 MFJ), and 20% above. High-income filers also face an additional 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax. State-level capital gains taxes vary widely — this calculator estimates federal liability only.
Tax-aware investing can materially raise after-tax returns. Common strategies include holding for the long term to access the lower LT rate; tax-loss harvesting by realising losses to offset gains within the same year; indexation benefits (India) for grandfathered real estate; reinvestment exemptions under Section 54 / 54F / 54EC for Indian property sellers; and 1031 like-kind exchanges (US real estate). Always model the trade carefully — this calculator gives you the baseline tax bill so you can compare alternatives.
Holding period determines classification. In India, listed equity becomes long-term after 12 months; most other assets after 24 months. In the US, anything held over 365 days qualifies as long-term and gets preferential 0/15/20% rates instead of ordinary income tax rates.
After the 23-Jul-2024 reform, listed equity STCG is taxed at a flat 20% (Section 111A). LTCG on listed equity is taxed at 12.5% on gains above the ₹1.25 lakh annual exemption.
For property acquired before 23-Jul-2024, you can pick whichever yields lower tax. High-inflation, long-held properties typically benefit from indexation; recent purchases or low-inflation periods often favour the flat 12.5% method. The calculator computes both — try toggling.
No. This tool calculates federal capital gains tax only. State capital gains taxes (e.g. California taxes them as ordinary income, while states like Florida and Texas have none) and the 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax are not modelled.
Virtual Digital Assets are taxed at a flat 30% on gains regardless of holding period, plus a 1% TDS on transfers. Losses cannot be set off against other income or carried forward — the calculator applies the flat 30% rate when Crypto is selected.
